New in the collection; Yaesu FT-101ZD MK3 FM

After some period of holiday and busy work now some updates on this blog.
Let's start with a new Yaesu FT-101ZD MK3 with the FM unit on board.
I have already the same rig with the AM unit fitted, you can't have both in one rig.
This 101ZD is in a very nice condition and is hardly used.
New generation transceivers can't beat the beautiful warm and mellow sound of this hybride 101ZD.

Na een periode van vakantie en andere drukte weer eens wat updates van deze site.
Om te beginnen heb ik een Yaesu FT-101ZD MK3 met FM unit bemachtigd.
De set is niet veel gebruikt en ziet er als nieuw uit.
Naast een exemplaar met het AM board heb ik nu deze dus ook, beide boards in een transceiver is niet mogelijk.
Nieuwe transceivers kunnen niet tippen aan het mooie en warme geluid van deze hybride 101ZD

80 meter qro end fed antenna

Mark pa1ssb made a qro 80 meter end fed antenna with a counterpoise.
He used a T200-6 toroid (400 watts) with 35-36 turns coil.
The cap is a 6 kV 101 pF.
Connect a few meters of wire to the counterpoise and 40 meters as antennawire.

Mark pa1ssb heeft een 80 meter qro end fed gebouwd met een tegencappaciteit.
Nodig is een T200-6 ringkern (400 watts) met zo'n 35 a 36 windingen.
De condensator is 6kV, 101 pF.
Gebruik een paar meter draad als tegencapaciteit en 40 meter voor de daadwerkelijke antenne.

This end fed is peaked for the phone part of the 80 meter band, but with a tuner it can be tuned for the whole bandsection. Deze end fed is gepiekt op het phone deel van 80 meter, maar met een tuner kan de hele 80 meter worden afgestemd.

Cheap external S-meter for Yaesu FT-857/897 (2)

I finished the budget external S-meter.
It's quite easy to make one by yourself with your own choosen background.
To align the meter on the Yaesu rig just go to menu 60 and select FS (Full Scale).
With the 100K pot adjust the needle exactly on the full scale of the meter, select Sig on menu 60 and your in.

De goedkope externe S meter is klaar.
Een vrij makkelijk project om zelf te doen waarbij je naar eigen smaak de achtergrond van de meter kiest.
Om de meter af te regelen op de Yeasu set, ga je naar menu 60 en kies je FS (Full Scale)
Met de potmeter regel je nu exact de naald op volle schaal en vervolgens selecteer je Sig in menu 60.
Dat is alles.

Cheap external S-meter for Yaesu FT-857/897 (1)

Sometimes it's more usefull to have an analog S-meter on a Yaesu FT-857/897.
There is a commercial model, but they costs approx 50 euro and beside that it's more fun to build one by yourself for 8 euro...!
What you need is a 100 maH meter (Ebay.com 6 euro incl p&p), a 100K pot , 3.5mm plug, piece of wire and an enclosure.

Soms is het erg handig om een analoge S-meter aan de Yaesu FT-857/897 aan te sluiten.
Er is daar een commerciele oplossing voor, deze kost echter zo'n 50 euro en bovendien is het leuker om deze zelf te bouwen en dat voor 8 euro!
We hebben een 100 maH meter nodig (Ebay.com 6 euro incl verzenden), een 100k potmeter, 3,5mm plugje, stukje snoer en een kastje.

On the internet and usergroups you can download the template for this meter.
Several colors are available, i choose the blue version.
Now open the meter very carefull and remove the decal.
With some glue you can put the new template over the decal.
Put everything back and again be carefull with the fragile needle!

Op het internet en diverse nieuwsgroepen zijn diverse templates te downloaden.
Ik koos voor een blauwe versie.
Open voorzichtig de meter en verwijder de schaalaflezing.
Lijm hier de nieuwe template overheen en plaats deze weer terug.
Nogmaals voorzichtig, de naald is erg kwetsbaar.

The enclosure i use is a waterproof enclosure in a grey color, i will repaint to black first.
First i spray it with a primer before it will be painted black. Both from an aerosol.

Het kastje dat ik wil gebruiken is een waterdicht kunsstof kastje in grijze kleur. Ik wil dat zwart spuiten, dus eerst zet ik deze in een primer en daarna spuit ik het kastje matzwart.

Today i finished this project. The final unit was modified with new coils.
Adjusting was a bit difficult. Advise from Peter was to use the scope.
I peaked the mix unit but did not saw any movement on the swr-power meter.
So i connected the scope to the antenna jacket. Now it's quite easy to adjust the mix unit.
As soon as i saw some power at the meter, i removed the scope and aligned the power on the mix unit and continued with the final unit.
My 4 meter TS-700 has now an output of approx 15 watts.

Project is vandaag afgerond. De final unit voorzien van nieuwe spoelen. Afregelen ging wat moeizaam, maar het advies van Peter was om een scope te gebruiken.
Op de swr-power meter was geen output te zien, dus heb ik de scope direct aan de antenne uitgang gehangen. Het afregelen ging toen een stuk beter. Zodra ik een beetje vermogen op de meter zag heb ik de scope verwijderd en heb de mix unit en vervolgens de eindtrap (final unit) afgeregeld.
Mijn 4 meter TS-700 geeft nu zo'n 15 watts output.

Bear in mind that you have to stretch L6 (left) for increase of power!

Let erop dat je L6 (links) wat uitrekt om meer vermogen te produceren!

Today i aligned the VFO to exactly 70.000 - 70.500 Mhz.
Initiality there was only a slight deviation between scale readout and actual frequency.
On the left site on top of the VFO you see two holes with an L and C to adjust this.

Vandaag heb ik het VFO afgeregeld op exact 70.000 - 70.500 Mhz.
Er was eigenlijk niet eens zo heel veel verschil tussen de schaaluitlezing en de werkelijke frequentie.
Bovenop het VFO aan de linkerkant is de mogelijkheid om deze correctie te doen (2 gaten met een L en C)

Modified MIX unit / Aangepaste MIX unit

Modified HET and Front End units / Aangepaste HET en Front End units.

Part 2 of this mod learned me that it's not so simple as it looks... I changed the Front end, HET unit, BPF and MIX unit.
For some reason i could not peak the signal of the HET unit. Had some mail exchange with Peter G4IZH and conclusion was some mistake with the mod of the HET unit. With the help of Theo PA0KN the receiver starts working on 4 meter. I made a mistake on T1 of the HET unit and there is some confusing regarding the T? which is on the board but not on the schema.
The only thing to do is to modify the Final unit. I allready made the coils for it.

Deel 2 van deze modificatie leerde me dat een en ander niet zo heel eenvoudig is....
Aangepakt werden de Front end unit, HET unit, BPF unit en MIX unit.
Om onduidelijke reden kon ik het signaal van de HET unit niet pieken. Na wat mailwisseling met Peter G4IZH werd duidelijk dat ik bij de modificatie aan de HET unit een fout gemaakt had. Met hulp van Theo PA0KN is de ontvanger reeds werkende .De C over T1 bleek aan de verkeerde kant te staan. Ook was er verwarring over T? welke niet op het schema staat maar wel aanwezig is op de HET unit.

Wat nu nog moet gebeuren is het aanpassen van de Final unit; spoelen daarvoor heb ik reeds gemaakt.
